Do you need email marketing or a CRM? Both, actually

· Ian Bensley

The false choice between an email platform and a CRM — why the split creates stale data and duplicate work, and what changes when the record and the campaign share a spine.

The question sounds reasonable: do we start with an email tool or a CRM? It's the wrong question, and answering it wrong is how you end up with two databases that disagree.

What the email tool knows

Your email platform knows who opened, clicked and unsubscribed. But it doesn't know the deal stage, the account owner or the support history. So its 'segments' are blind to everything that happens after the click.

What the CRM knows

Your CRM knows the relationship — but if it can't send and track email, it hands marketing back to the other tool, and the sync begins. Every sync is a delay and a source of drift.

When they share a spine

Put the record and the campaign on the same data and the split dissolves. A segment can filter on deal stage and email engagement. A reply threads onto the deal. An automation reads both. There's nothing to sync because there's one source of truth.

This is the same argument as the hidden tax of five tools — just applied to the two you were about to buy separately.
