Reports people actually act on
Why most CRM dashboards get ignored, and how to build reports tied to a decision — with the metrics, cohorts and forecasts a team will open on a Monday morning.
A dashboard nobody opens is just a screensaver. The fix isn't prettier charts — it's tying every report to a decision someone has to make.
Start from the decision, not the data
'Which deals need attention this week?' produces a useful report. 'Show me all deals' produces wallpaper. Write the question first; the metrics follow.
Report on movement, not totals
A total is a snapshot; a decision needs a trend. Deals created vs. closed this week, pipeline added vs. slipped, list growth vs. churn — deltas drive action, totals just reassure.
Make the forecast defensible
A weighted forecast built from stage probabilities (see pipeline design) is a number you can stand behind. A hopeful 'best case' is a number that gets you in trouble.
Put it where the decision happens
The best report is the one on the screen when the choice is made — a saved view at the top of the board, not a PDF emailed on the 3rd. Because reporting reads the same live data as everything else, there's no export step to go stale.
