Ask the assistant from a flow

Last updated 14 October 2026

The Ask the assistant step hands a job to the assistant in the middle of a flow: “Read {{record.name}}’s last three emails and, if they asked for a quote, set the deal’s stage to Quote”. The flow waits while it works, then carries on with its answer.

Setting it up

  1. Add the step and write the goal. Merge tags fill in from the record and the trigger.
  2. Pick the actions it may use to change anything. Leave the list empty and it only reads and answers.
  3. Set the most steps and credits it may use. One credit per step; it stops at the cap.

Its answer

Later steps can use {{steps.<id>.result}} (what it said), {{steps.<id>.outcome}} (done, read_only, needs_person or failed) and {{steps.<id>.changed}} (how many things it changed).

Who it acts as

The step runs as the Flow steps task in Assistant tasks. It starts at Propose only: it reads and answers and changes nothing. When you trust it, an admin raises that task to let flows act. Sending and deleting always wait for a person. Everything it changes is in the task’s log with an Undo button.

Text copied into the goal from a form or an email is treated as information, never as instructions.
