Dynamic blocks, HTML and plain-text emails

Choose the kind of email
When you start a campaign or a template, pick Blank canvas (drag & drop), Saved template, HTML code or Plain text. You can change your mind later with the Email type switch above the editor.
- Drag & drop — the block builder, with saved sections and dynamic blocks.
- HTML — paste or write your own HTML, or use Import HTML or .zip to bring in an email made elsewhere: drop a .zip, a folder, or the .html file with its images, and the images are saved to a new Content Library folder and linked up for you. Style blocks, media queries and Outlook conditional comments are kept. The preview shows exactly what will be sent: scripts, forms and embedded frames are removed, links are tracked, and if there’s no
{{unsubscribe_url}}link the standard footer is added. - Plain text — just words. Web addresses become links, and a plain HTML copy goes with it so opens and clicks are tracked. The footer is added at the end if you don’t include an unsubscribe link.
Switching type keeps every version. The first time you switch to HTML or plain text it starts as a copy of your current email; switching back to drag & drop brings your design back exactly as it was.
Dynamic blocks
A dynamic block is only included for recipients who match its conditions — a Gold-members perk, a UK-only offer, a renewal note for customers whose contract ends soon.
- Drag in a Dynamic block from the palette and put blocks inside it, or hover any block and click the lightning button (or Make dynamic in its settings).
- Set the conditions. They are the same ones lists and segments use, plus In list or view, which follows a list (or a saved view marked Use for campaigns) as it is at send time. You can also start from a dynamic list’s conditions.
- Optionally give it a name; the purple badge on the canvas shows the name or the rule.
Conditions are checked for each person at the moment their email sends, so they follow the record as it is then. This works in campaigns, in flow emails, and in one-to-one or bulk emails sent from records using a template (including scheduled ones). Test sends include every dynamic block so you can proofread them all; use Preview → Preview as to see exactly what one contact would get.
When a block is left out for everyone
If a rule can’t be checked for someone, the block is left out for them rather than shown to the wrong person. The badge turns amber and explains why when:
- the rule checks a different object from the one the email goes to (for example a Contacts rule in an email to Companies);
- a field the rule uses has been deleted, or a list it names no longer exists;
- the object itself has been deleted.
A campaign won’t schedule while one of its dynamic blocks has one of these problems. Deleting a field or an object warns you about every email whose dynamic blocks use it. Emails with no record behind them, such as transactional API sends, leave dynamic blocks out.
See who got each block
Once a campaign has sent, its report has a Dynamic blocks card listing each dynamic block with how many recipients got it, for example Gold members: 312 of 4,000 (7.8%). Click Who got it or Who didn’t to filter the recipient table below, and export that list as a CSV. The numbers are recorded as each email is sent, so they stay the same even if records or lists change later. Campaigns sent before 30 September 2026 show 0 for every block.
Saved sections
A dynamic block can be saved as a section like any other, and keeps its conditions wherever it’s used. A linked section can also be made dynamic in one email only; detaching it passes the conditions on to its blocks.
